#1 Start With A Clean Slate
Remove all loose items off your desk by placing them on the floor or an empty desk close to you. Untangle all cables and make sure you have a recycling bin close by. Avoid moving rubbish from one spot to another. If you don’t need it as you come across it, just chuck it in the bin, a good idea is to not crumple or tear anything up, in case you realise you need it after all. By doing it this way it is still salvageable. Once you have an empty surface give everything a good clean.
#2 Organization takes place after de-cluttering
Once you have a clean slate it’s time to start prioritising. Decide what is most important and what you use the most. These things should all be placed in such a way that they are all easily accessible. Paper should go in a paper tray. To avoid just dumping any loose paper in there, try labelling the different sections (Inbox, Outbox, File and Shred). Also start using a bound note pad or diary rather than sticky notes to quickly scribble things down: that way you are keeping all your notes together and avoiding cluttering your desk with loose bits of paper.
#3 Keep all stationery together
Stationery organisers such as the one below are useful but if you are just looking for a quick fix an old clean mug or empty pot noodle container will make do. Remember to keep constantly used things simple and well positioned. Here is a quick list of must have stationery for every desk:
- 2 Black and 2 Blue pens (in case one won’t work you have another)
- 1 Pencil
- 1 Eraser
- 1 Pencil Sharpener
- 1 30cm Ruler
- Correction fluid
#4 Store items that are not used regularly away from your desk
These items do not need to be in easy reach, use any extra storage away from your desk to organise this separately, therefore making more room for the things you do use frequently.
#5 Use your Drawers
Drawers are not just meant for keeping a secret stash of sweets. Use them to free up space on you desk. if you don’t have any drawers here are some alternatives:
